This sculpture represents the harmonic interval of the major second (9:8 pitch ratio).
The line is defined by an equation developed by Structure Workshop. The pure two note interval, or dyad, is augmented by an additional function that creates a decay along the z-axis. As a whole the form can be seen as representing a chord falling into silence.
The sculpture is made out of cast aluminium and has a total spline length of 150m. It was CNC milled using a robot arm in 145 discrete pieces before being sand cast and welded together. Hidden connections allow the piece to be broken into 7 pieces to enable transport and access.
