The brief was to design a demountable structure from sustainable materials that could be used to temporarily host foreign delegates at the Glastonbury music festival. Our response was an external structure formed from a series of pre-fabricated panels using home grown coppiced sweet chestnut. The internal stretched fabric is printed cotton.

The structural arrangement was determined by linking simple computer applications to automatically generate and analyse random structural configurations (described by intersecting planes). This generating process was repeated until a suitable frame was produced that incorporated a degree of uniformity and suitable doors. The resulting frame is stiff and light and precludes the need for conventional post and beam elements, notably at the corners. The fabric has double curvature to eliminate wrinkles and serves to further brace the structure.
