A close understanding of materials and their properties is fundamental to our role. In addition to the typical construction materials of timber, steel, concrete, masonry and glass it is often necessary or advantageous to explore alternatives such as plastics or metal alloys.

Structural engineering design naturally seeks economy in the volume of material used and where choice allows we select materials from sustainable resources and with a low embodied energy as well as considering the potential for re-use or recycling at the end of the life of the structure.
