Structure Workshop were delighted to contribute to the design of the Fenland Black Oak Table, an extraordinary project helmed by master craftsman Hamish Lowe.
The table is made with planks from the Jubilee Oak, the largest intact piece of bog oak ever found at 13m long. Bog oak is the UK’s rarest native hardwood native, and the Jubilee Oak is estimated to be over 5000 years old.
The table top is supported on a demountable phosphor bronze understructure spanning 6m in its centre and cantilevering 3m at either end, tapering to a depth of only 75mm at its tip. Structure Workshop carried out structural analysis of the understructure to ensure the deflections would not damage the fragile and precious table top
